This corpus contains written learner language by Spanish students of English at the universities of Granada and Jaén.

Handwritten compositions by university students. The compositions were typed up verbatim, and students' editions of their writing were encoded in editorial tags.

The corpus was compiled and tagged for research into SLA, FLT and NLP. It builds on a section compiled and error-tagged with EARS for Ana Díaz Negrillo's PhD dissertation, documented in "A Fine-grained Error Tagger for Learner Corpora" (2007) and in "EARS: a User's Manual" (2009). The present project includes extension of the original corpus, XML-encoding of the texts and editorial tags, addition of TEI-conformant headers, upgrading of the original error tags and POS annotation of the corpus.

The corpus includes material mainly from the 1st year students of English at the universities of Granada (years 2002-2004 and 2007-2009) and Jan (years 2007-2009). The text collection was organised as a voluntary classroom activity run at three different points through the academic year (beginning-middle-end). In the task learners picked up one of the fourth options in the task sheet, which contained three topics for argumentative writing and one for free-writing. The corpus collection procedures are further documented in Ana Díaz Negrillo's PhD dissertation "A Fine-grained Error Tagger for Learner Corpora" (2007).

 GR-A-4-468-1 1 . THE IMPORTANCE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES NOWADAYS . - The world is changing everyday and it is changing constantly . For example a country that 50 years ago was kind of " useless " , today is a " big point " , i n out world , and vice versa . That thing is a good example to describe China . This country was poor in the past , there were ( as today ) many many people but , most of them were farmers or used to work on the sea or in the country . They worked too much but for most people this thing was n't rewarding . But as the time goes by , those farmers bec ame more and more important , and they took their products to the market , they made exchanges with European countr yes , with America ... And teh country make itself rich . Those exhanges with foreign countries were each time wider , and that made the country more powerful . China was in the stock - market , Chinese products were sold around the world ... China was then important . So that the foreigns countries could see that China was a good thing , so the bussiness with that country were a good deal . But they ha d to have a common language to understand each other . And though we all know that English is the most language used today , if Chinese people do n't know English , European and American should learn Chinese to make " good bussiness " . So more and more people started to learn Chinese . And that language went into the most important language in worlds . But I do n't think that this laguage is taught at University because we like it , and people do n't choose it because it 's a pretty one ( well maybe some people do ) but because it 's important to progress economically . This thing is also happening with languages like Russian or Arabian . We all should learn them on some way , because as much people say they are the languages of future . Those countries are the ones of future if everything continues like today .
